Civil War Obituary

The Phillips Times July 5, 1902

George Grindle, Senior. Another of Price county’s old and well known residents has passed away. On Tuesday morning [July 1, 1902] at nine o’clock in his home at Fifield, Geo. Grindle fell into his last sleep. The diseased [sic] lived in this county since his arrival in 1884, moving from Phillips to Fifield early in the past spring. He was active in all matters affecting local interest and political issues and had held various official positions in the county. He was a veteran of the Civil war in which he made an honorable record entering as private in Co. H. of the 197^th Ohio; and rising to the rank of First Lieutenant. He was born in Wayne county Ohio. March 16, 1835, was married in 1865 and came to Price county in 1883. Eleven children were born to them, of whom three sons, Philo, of Phillips, and George and James of Fifield are now living. Fortunately his sons were all able to be with him during his last illness. The diseased [sic] had been in poor health for a considerable length of time and early in the winter was compelled to suspend all business activity, his disease originating through the hardships of the war having prostrated him, and finally carrying him to his grave. Mr. Grindle leaves a large circle of friends who regret his departure and extend hearty sympathy to his most estimable wife in her bereavement. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, being conducted by the G.A.R. Post of this city. He was burried [sic] at Fifield.
